Highlights
The 1966 World Cup was played in England, the birthplace of football. A few months before kick-off, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen from an exhibition in London, then found in a garden by a dog named Pickles. Two-time defending champions Brazil went out in the first round, Pelé having been the target of repeated fouls.
North Korea produced the shock of the tournament by beating Italy 1-0 with a goal from Pak Doo-ik. In the quarter-finals the North Koreans led Portugal 3-0 before Eusébio scored four goals to turn the match around (5-3). The Portuguese forward finished as top scorer with nine goals and his team took third place.
In the final at Wembley, Alf Ramsey's England, captained by Bobby Moore, faced West Germany, who equalised at 2-2 in the last minute of normal time. In extra time, Geoff Hurst scored a goal that is still disputed, the ball bouncing down off the crossbar close to the line, before completing his hat-trick (4-2). England won their only world title to date.
