Highlights
Held in Chile two years after the devastating earthquake of 1960, the 1962 World Cup saw Brazil retain their title. Pelé was injured in the second match, however, and took no further part in the tournament. His replacement Amarildo scored a decisive brace against Spain, and it was Garrincha who carried the team, scoring twice against England in the quarter-finals and twice against Chile in the semi-finals.
The first round was marred by the "Battle of Santiago", an exceptionally violent match between Chile and Italy, won 2-0 by the hosts against an Italian side reduced to nine men. Against the USSR (4-4), Colombia's Marcos Coll scored the only goal direct from a corner in the tournament's history. Six players shared the top scorer award with four goals each, and Chile finished third.
In the final in Santiago, Czechoslovakia took the lead through Josef Masopust, but Brazil hit back through Amarildo, Zito and Vavá (3-1). Having already scored in 1958, Vavá became the first player to score in two World Cup finals.
