Biography

Born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, Lionel Andrés Messi is the son of a steelworker and a domestic cleaner. His footballing talent was evident from childhood, but at the age of ten a diagnosis revealed a growth hormone deficiency that threatened his physical development. The costly treatment was beyond his family's means. It was FC Barcelona who came to his rescue: the Catalan club offered to finance his treatment entirely in exchange for his commitment to the club. Messi moved to Catalonia at 13, joining La Masia, Barcelona's legendary youth academy.

His rise through Barcelona's youth ranks was dazzling. In 2004, at 17, he played his first La Liga match for the senior team, becoming one of the youngest players ever to wear the Barça shirt. From his very first appearances, his dribbling, goal sense, and vision of play left observers astonished. In 2005, he scored on his Champions League debut. In 2009, at 21, he won his first Ballon d'Or, inaugurating what would become an almost endless series. Under Pep Guardiola's management, he slotted into one of the most brilliant systems in football history, alongside Xavi and Iniesta.

The peak of his Barcelona career spanned from 2009 to 2021. He won the Champions League four times with Barcelona (2006, 2009, 2011, 2015) and La Liga ten times. His individual statistics defy comprehension: 672 goals in 778 matches for Barça, a La Liga record of 50 goals in a single season in 2011-12, and a calendar year record of 91 goals in 2012. He won eight Ballons d'Or — an absolute world record. His rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, who alternately claimed the game's supreme individual award, became one of the most thrilling sporting debates of the 2010s, together raising the global standard of football to new heights.

For years shadowed by the absence of a title with the Argentine national team, Messi's career reached a decisive turning point in 2021, when he won the Copa América with Argentina — his first international trophy. In 2022, in Qatar, he led his country to the World Cup in what is widely considered one of the finest individual performances in tournament history, culminating in a title after an epic final against France. At 35, he finally claimed the one trophy that had eluded him, silencing years of pressure and incomprehension from part of the Argentine public.

Lionel Messi's legacy, for a majority of experts, is that of the most complete footballer of all time. His eight Ballons d'Or, his records in La Liga and the Champions League, and his decisive contribution to club and international titles make him a monument of world sport. Now based in Miami since 2023, he continues to dazzle at Inter Miami CF, carrying his legend to the United States. Understated, hardworking, and profoundly Argentine, Messi embodies the ideal of the humble and gifted footballer.
