Marco Pantani
Biography
Born on 13 January 1970 in Cesena, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, Marco Pantani grew up in a modest family and discovered cycling through his grandfather. Blessed with a slight build but explosive, extraordinary power in the mountains, he turned professional in 1992 with the Carrera Jeans-Tassoni team. His early baldness, which he embraced by shaving his head completely, and his colourful bandana quickly made him one of the most visually recognisable figures in the sport.
His rise was rapid from the mid-1990s onward. In 1994 and 1995, he finished on the Giro d'Italia podium twice, revealing a pure climbing talent capable of dropping every rival on the toughest mountain passes. In 1997, he delivered a performance that remains legendary, climbing Alpe d'Huez in thirty-seven minutes and thirty-five seconds, a time that remains the absolute reference for the climb to this day.
The year 1998 marked the absolute peak of his career. Pantani won the Giro d'Italia and, immediately afterward, the Tour de France, becoming the last rider to date to complete the Giro-Tour double in the same season and the only Italian in history to have done so. His flamboyant racing style, built on desperate attacks on the steepest slopes, earned him the nickname "il Pirata" (the Pirate), a reference to the bandana covering his shaved head.
In 1999, while leading the Giro d'Italia and seemingly headed for another victory, he was excluded from the race before the penultimate stage after a blood test revealed an abnormally high haematocrit level, at Madonna di Campiglio. This episode, never fully explained, shattered his career and his mental health. He never regained his best form, sinking gradually into depression and cocaine addiction.
Marco Pantani died alone on 14 February 2004 in a hotel room in Rimini, aged thirty-four, from a cocaine overdose. His death plunged Italy into mourning and reignited a national debate on the ravages of doping and sporting pressure. Despite this tragic end, he remains one of the most beloved and spectacular climbers in the history of cycling.
