Highlights

The 2006 World Cup was held in Germany, where the popular enthusiasm surrounding the host team, who finished third, earned the tournament the nickname of the "summer fairy tale". Germany's Miroslav Klose was top scorer with five goals. The round of 16 tie between Portugal and the Netherlands produced sixteen yellow cards and four dismissals, the latter still a record for a World Cup match.

Despite the match-fixing scandal then rocking their domestic league, Italy conceded just two goals in the entire tournament. In the semi-final in Dortmund, they knocked out Germany thanks to goals from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero in the final minutes of extra time. France, laboured in the first round, went on to beat Spain, Brazil and Portugal in turn, inspired by Zinedine Zidane, who was named player of the tournament.

In the final in Berlin, Zidane opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Marco Materazzi headed the equaliser. In extra time, in the last match of his career, the French captain was sent off for headbutting Materazzi in the chest. Italy won on penalties (5-3), David Trezeguet having hit the bar, to claim their fourth world title.
